Abstract
542,113. Supply systems for space discharge. apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 15, 1940, No. 16552. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1939. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] A circuit for operating discharge devices, e.g. a lamp 1, having pre-heated electrodes 2 comprises a transformer 7 with a primary winding 8 connected in parallel with the lamp across the high-leakage auto-transformer 5, secondary windings 11 to supply heating current for the electrodes and a magnetic shunt 12 constructed to saturate at the initial starting voltage and to desaturate at the arc-drop voltage and so increase the impedance of the winding 8 giving it a non- linear characteristic whereby it absorbs a minimum current when the arc has started. A capacity 9 is preferably included in circuit of the primary winding designed to resonate when the full voltage is applied. In a modification, the circuit is adapted for the supply to two discharge lamps. Specification 498,107 is referred to.
