Abstract

793,042. Supply circuits for space discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 14, 1955 [Aug. 13, 1954], No. 23621/54. Addition to 730,024. Class 38 (4). An electric circuit for starting and operating from an A.C. supply a L.P. discharge lamp 8 having a pair of heatable electrodes 6, 7, which circuit is an improvement in or modification of that defined by Claim 1 of the parent Specification which is referred to, comprises a pair of input terminals of which one, 1, is connected to one lamp electrode 6 through the primary winding 3 of an electrode-heating transformer 4 and a magnetically separate lamp ballast inductor 5 connected in series in that order, the transformer having a secondary winding 9 connected across the electrode 6 to supply current thereto, while the other lamp electrode 7 is connected across the input terminals 1, 2, for the supply of heating current, in a series circuit which includes the primary winding 3 and a capacitor 10, the latter being connected between the winding 3 and the electrode 7 ; the capacitance of capacitor 10 is such that the circuit has a P.F. which is leading, unity, or a lagging P.F. of not less than 0.7 when operating from an A.C. supply of substantially sinusoidal waveform and the arrangement is such that in operation the voltage across the capacitor 10 does not substantially exceed the supply voltage. Starting of the lamp may be facilitated by an earthed starting strip or earthed metal plate forming part of the lamp fitting, not shown, by providing that the switch, not shown, by which the circuit is made closes a number of times during each operation in order to find a vavourable value of the supply voltage alternation, by connecting the capacitor 10 to a tapping point on the inductor 5 instead of to the interconnection point 11 in order that on connection of the supply the capacitor charging current causes a voltage pulse which is stepped-up by auto-transformer action in the inductor. The circuit may be modified to supply a plurality of lamps in series, by providing on the transformer 4 further secondary windings which are connected to the intermediate electrodes in the series chain. The Provisional Specification describes a circuit for supplying a plurality of lamps connected in parallel. Specification 533,843 also is referred to.
