Abstract

1317661 Gas discharge tube dimmer PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 June 1970 [24 June 1969] 29879/70 Heading H2H In a circuit arrangement for the stepwise dimming of parallel connected discharge lamps, each discharge lamp has at least two ballast impedances connected with it, and at least one bridge rectifier associated with one of the ballast impedances. The heater electrodes of low pressure mercury discharge lamp 13, are fed from transformer 10 via secondary windings 11 and 15. The electrode 14 is connected to ballast inductors 16, 18 and 20. Ballast inductors 18 and 20 are connected to bridge rectifiers 17 and 19. Similar connections are made to a second discharge lamp 13<SP>1</SP>. Currents can only flow across the bridge rectifiers 17 and 19, and 17<SP>1</SP> and 19<SP>1</SP> when the appropriate switch 21 or 22 is closed, these switches being effectively connected across the rectifier bridges. In this way the discharge lamp 13 and 13<SP>1</SP> can be dimmed in a stepwise manner. The rectifier bridges having the effect that the two discharge lamps circuits are effectively decoupled so that the failure of one lamp does not affect the other. In a second embodiment the ballast inductors may be all connected in series and the rectifier bridges may be used to short out appropriate ballast inductors.
