1,035,787. Supply systems for high pressure discharge tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 10, 1964 [Sept. 10, 1963], No. 35677/63. Heading H2H. In a circuit for a high-pressure mercury vapour/sodium iodide lamp having a series ballast B, to improve the stability on starting, the ratio of the inductive impedance 9 to that of the whole ballast is made at least 1À4. The ballast may be predominantly capacitive which gives better starting or predominantly inductive giving better running conditions. A starting electrode, close to one of the main electrodes may be connected through a high-value resistor either to the other electrode or to a step-up transformer. The inductor 9 may form part of a stray field auto transformer.
