Abstract
1,038,423. Supply systems for high pressure gas-discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 4, 1964 [June 7, 1963], No. 23185/64. Heading H2H. A circuit for igniting a high pressure discharge lamp 30 having main electrodes 31, 32 and an auxiliary electrode 33 adjacent the main electrode 31 has the auxiliary electrode 33 connected to the remote main electrode 32 by way of the two windings of an autotransformer 4 and to the adjacent main electrode 31 by way of one winding only of this transformer. On connection of the circuit to an A.C. supply 1, 2 current flows in the ballast inductor 6 and the winding 42-41 of the transformer 4. The voltage induced in the winding 42-43 of the transformer is applied to the electrodes 33, 31 producing ionization of the gas filling in the lamp 30. The voltage between the electrodes 33, 32 is equal to the sum of the voltages in the transformer windings 42-41, 42-43 thus producing a glow discharge between the electrodes 33, 32 which causes ignition of the lamp 30. A resistor 5 limits the current through the auxiliary electrode 33.
