Abstract

772,525. Supply systems for space discharge tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 29, 1955 [April 1, 1954], No. 9141/55. Class 38 (4). In a circuit arrangement comprising a gas and/or vapour-filled electric discharge tube, e.g. a fluorescent lamp 1 having two filament electrodes 12, 13 and a combined filament heating and arc discharge current supply transformer 6 having two filament heating current supply windings 5-16 and 18-2 for supplying the electrodes, the transformer has a ferromagnetic shunt 7 making it magnetically leaky, the filament heating windings .are positioned one on each side of the shunt 7, and the filament heating circuits each include a separate respective winding 14, 17 of a separate auxiliary transformer 15; the latter windings are magnetically coupled together and the transformer 15 has the property of low impedance when on load but high impedance when on no load whereby should one filament heating circuit be interrupted the impedance of the winding 14 or 17 in the other circuit becomes so high that the electrode in the said other circuit is not brought to an electron-emissive temperature, thereby preventing initiation of the discharge in the lamp when one electrode is unheated. As shown, the transformer 6 is auto-wound, comprising a primary winding 2-8 with a tapping at 11 for connection to A.C. input terminals 9, 10 and a discharge current supplying secondary winding 2-3 and 4-5. The lamp may have on the inner or outer side of its envelope an electrically conductive coating not shown to facilitate ignition.
