Abstract

738,569. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 7, 1952 [Aug. 7, 1951], No. 18616/51. Class 38 (4). A hot cathode electric discharge lamp 10 is started by a relay which has a normally open switch 20 in the interconnection between the lamp filaments 12, 17 and a coil 21 which is shunted by a capacitor 24 and is serially connected with another, normally closed, switch 23 of the relay across the lamp discharge current supplying terminals 11, 16; the lamp and relay coil circuit are connected through a ballast impedance, shown as a resistance 14, to circuit input terminals 15, 19 to which a D.C. supply is applied. In starting the capacitor 24 is charged up until its voltage attains the pull-in voltage of the relay, energization of which closes switch 20 to complete the filament heating circuit and opens switch 23 to stop the supply mains energization of the relay coil 21. However, the discharge of capacitor 24 maintains the energization of the relay coil for a period to permit filament heating and on eventual drop-out of the relay switch 20 re-opens to put the full supply voltage across the lamp and a radio interference suppressor capacitor 25 shunted across the switch 20 produces a pulse to assist starting of the lamp. During running the volt drop across the ballast impedance prevents the capacitor 24 recharging to such a value as to pull-in the relay again. The invention is applicable to a plurality of series-connected lamps in which case one switch 20 is provided for each lamp and all such switches operate in sequence. Specification 702,939 is referred to.
