Abstract

The ballast circuit for discharge lamps, particularly high tention types, removes the need for individual lamp inductances and some wiring through the use of a single distribution transformer provided with protection against short circuiting and a power factor correction capacitor (11) across the transformer primary. Parallel type priming circuits (10) are derived from a separate winding. Insulation of lighting and supply circuits is enhanced by earthing the transformer core (8) and by an anti-capacitive screen (19) between the primary and priming windings. A primary to secondary screen is not required since these windings are not coincident.
