Abstract

906,888. Discharge lamp circuits. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 22, 1961 [Feb. 25, 1960], No. 6741/60. Addition to 847,391. Class 38 (4). In an arrangement as disclosed in the parent Specification modified for use on a supply of not less than 300 c.p.s., the ballast is a capacitor 3, and a branch circuit comprising a rectifier 6 and a resistor 7 is connected directly across the lamp. Initially, the rectifier 6 charges the capacitor 3 to approximately peak A.C. voltage which is additional to one half wave of the supply voltage, and which is sufficient to strike the lamp. After striking, the D.C. voltage across the lamp falls and D.C. current circulating through the lamp is restricted by a resistor 7. A starting strip 12 may be connected to one terminal 2 of the supply through a resistor 13. If the lamp has heatable electrodes, a heating transformer 8-10 may be provided. The lamp striking voltage may be increased by connecting the resistor 7 to a point 14. Another arrangement described in the Specification (Fig. 2, not shown), has additional auto-transformer windings for increasing the lamp and D.C. voltages respectively.
