Abstract
1281358 Supply circuits for discharge lamps MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 27 Aug 1969 [27 Aug 1968 4 Nov 1968] 42575/69 Heading H2H A circuit for operating a discharge lamp includes a ballast device, a pulse transformer, and a reverse blocking diode thyristor connected across the lamp electrodes. In the circuit of Fig. 1, the lamp 12 has heated electrodes 13, 14 and is connected in series with the ballast 11 across a mains supply 8. The ballast and supply are also connected in series through the electrodes with both windings of a pulse transformer 15 and a reverse blocking diode thyristor 18. In operation, the supply voltage is sufficient to break down the thyristor 18 each cycle to permit a pulse to pass through the heating electrodes. When the electrodes are sufficiently heated, the pulse is able to strike the lamp, after which the lamp running voltage is insufficient to cause the thyristor 18 to break down again. Because the thyristor 18 is of the reverse blocking type, the ballast 11 may saturate to allow increased electrode heating current. In further embodiments, Figs. 3 and 5 (not shown), a diode is connected in series with the thyristor 18. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, saturation of the ballast 11 is brought about by using an additional winding.
