Abstract
1369962 Circuits for starting discharge lamps R E SMOLYANSKY L I FAINSHMIDT V A SMOLYANSKY E I AFANASIEVA L A PETROV J P ZAVALSKY and E A ALPEROVICH 8 Feb 1973 6141/73 Heading H2H A circuit for starting a discharge lamp 1 comprises electronic switches 5, 10 and a photosensitive device 16 positionable adjacent one of the thermionic electrodes 2 of the lamp and responsive to its light emission. When an A.C. supply is connected to terminals a, b heating current flows through the electrodes 2 via the thyristor 5 connected across a bridge rectifier 4. The lamp 1 eventually emits a flush of light which is received by the device 16 thereby lowering its resistance and triggering the thyristor 10. The thyristor 5 is therefore switched off causing resonance in the circuit formed by a ballast 3 and a capacitor 17. A high voltage pulse is therefore applied to the lamp to start the lamp. In a modification the thyristors and the rectifier bridge are replaced by a pair of triacs.
