Abstract

1445291 Control and starting systems for vapour discharge lamps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 March 1974 [30 Maich 1973] 13431/74 Heading H2H A circuit arrangement for igniting and supplying a gas or vapour discharge lamp having preheatable electrodes comprises an ignition device which includes a transistor which is rendered alternately conductive and non-conductive at a high frequency during the initial part of the igniting process, and a further switching element being provided to assist the ignition process during the remaining part thereof. A gas discharge lamp 5 having preheatable electrodes 3, 4, one end of each of which are connected to A.C. supply terminals 1, 2 respectively, the connection to terminal 1 including an inductive ballast 6. The other ends of the electrodes 3, 4 are connected to the input terminals 7, 8 of a diode bridge 9-12, the output terminals 13, 14 of which are interconnected by a transistor 17 forming part of an ignition device for the lamp 5. A resistor capacitor circuit 19, 20 having a very short time constant is also connected across the bridge output terminals 13, 14 and serves to render, by way of a diac 24, the transistor 17 alternately conductive and non-conductive thereby causing high voltage peaks to occur between the lamp electrodes 3, 4 which causes the initial preheating of the lamp electrodes. As the amplitude of the voltage peaks increases, a neon tube 24 eventually breaks down whereupon a thyristor 23 becomes conductive which causes the transistor 17 to become inoperative and also continues the electrode preheating process. This ignition procedure repeats during each half cycle of the A.C. supply voltage until the lamp 5 ignites whereupon the ignition device is rendered inoperative. A negative temperature coefficient resistor 22 is provided in parallel with the capacitor 24, the function of which is to terminate the ignition process should the lamp fail to ignite within a predetermined period. In a further embodiment the thyristor is connected between the output terminal 13 and the base of the transistor 17 in which case the transistor functions to generate the voltage peaks and also to carry the subsequent preheating current.
