Abstract

1413225 Control systems for gas discharge tubes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 12244/73 Heading H2H A starting and operating circuit for a low pressure gas discharge tube 5 comprises a capacitor 3 and an inductor 4 connected in series with the electrodes 6, 7 of the tube and a glow discharge starter device 25 across terminals 1, 2 of an A.C. supply, an auxiliary circuit including a thyristor 14 being provided by means of which a high voltage is generated whereby to assist the starting of the tube 5. When an A.C. source is connected to the terminals 1, 2 a capacitor 16 charges, by way of a diode 12 and resistor 16 until the breakdown voltage of a diac 17 is reached, upon breakdown of which the thyristor 14 is gated into conduction whereupon capacitor 3 is charged. In the succeeding halfcycle of the A.C. source the voltage applied to the inductor 4 and lamp 5 is double the peak value of the A.C. source. The glow discharge device 25 then ignites and current flows in the circuit 3, 4, 6, 25, 7 to bring the electrodes 6, 7 to emission temperature. After a period the contact of the glow discharge open thus inducing a high voltage peak in the inductor 4 so igniting the tube 5. After the tube has ignited the circuit conditions are such as to render conducting a transistor 20 thus inhibiting charging of the capacitor 16 and firing of the thyristor 14. By connecting the auxiliary circuit to the point 10 in the tube circuit, the auxiliary circuit is rendered ineffective should the tube be removed. Apparatus of the kind described does not require the device 25 to satisfy critical voltage requirements.
