Abstract

[Also in Division F4] An ignition and flame safety control system for a gas burner comprises a silicon-controlled rectifier 20 in series with the primary of a spark ignition coil 23, and a thermistor 25 connected to the control electrode 27 of the S.C.R. 20 and adapted to be heated by the burner flame to stop the firing of the S.C.R. In operation when a manual or thermally operated switch 12 is closed a solenoid valve 17 supplying gas to the burner is energized but does not open since the energizing current is limited by a resistance 19. A capacitor from an A.C. supply 24 is charged through a diode 29 and is discharged periodically by the S.C.R. causing sparking at an igniter plug connected to the ignition coil 23. The S.C.R. and the diode also shunt the resistance 19 and consequently the solenoid gas valve 17 opens. If ignition succeeds the burner flame reduces the resistance of the thermistor 25 and the gate voltage is insufficient to fire the S.C.R. The gas valve however remains open. If ignition fails then the current through the heater of a bimetal switch 16 is maintained at a relatively high level by the thermistor and causes the switch to open (Fig. 2). In a modified circuit (Fig. 2), the thermistor is of the type having a resistance which increases with increase in temperature. In further modifications (Figs. 3, 4) the S.C.R. is in parallel with the condenser 24 and the ignition coil 23, and the charging diode 29 is omitted. The charging of the condenser and its discharge through the S.C.R. take place during each alternate half-cycle of the applied voltage.
