Abstract

1411482 Starting systems for discharge lamps MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC WORKS Ltd and MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 5 Feb 1973 [7 Feb 1972] 5700/73 Heading H2H A starting system for a discharge lamp 1 comprises a pulse generating circuit including a transformer 5, a first capacitor 7, a first bidirectional diode thyristor 6 and a resistor 8, a diode 9, a second capacitor 10 and a second bidirectional diode thyristor 11. During the positive half cycles of the A.C. supply, the diode 9 is reverse biased and initially the thyristor 11 is conductive thereby charging the capacitor 10 until the charging current falls to a value insufficient to hold the thyristor 11 conductive. The capacitor 10 charges the capacitor 7 thereby switching on the thyristor 6. The capacitor 7 then discharges through the primary winding n 1 of the transformer 5 to generate a high voltage pulse in the secondary winding n 2 which momentarily switches on the thyristor 11 to supply the pulse to the lamp. Starting pulses at a frequency of 5 KHz are applied to the lamp until the charge on the capacitor 10 falls below the breakover voltage of the thyristor 6. During the negative half cycles of the A.C. supply, the diode 9 is forward biased and the residual charge on the capacitor 10 is superimposed on the instantaneous supply voltage to switch on the thyristor 11 thus enabling heating current to be supplied to the lamp cathodes 2, 2<SP>1</SP> via the secondary winding n 2 . Once the lamp has been ignited, the lamp voltage is less than the breakover voltage of the thyristor 11 which is therefore switched off.
