Abstract

1331821 Discharge lamp supply PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Nov 1971 [21 Nov 1970] 53604/71 Heading H2H A starting and operating circuit for a discharge lamp 7 which may be a low pressure mercury vapour lamp having preheated electrodes 8, 9 comprises a capacitor 4 and an inductance 3 in series with the lamp and with a branch comprising a diode 5 and a resistor 6 having a positive temperature characteristic. The lamp is further shunted by a glow discharge switch 10 and in operation, after the first half cycle of a supply connected at 1, 2, capacitor 4 is charged to double the peak input voltage which causes the glow at 10 to ignite. At this time the current in the branch 5, 6 is small and merely balances the discharging effect of the glow discharge. Heat produced by this discharge causes bimetal electrodes 11, 12 in the switch 10 to close together and produce a preheating current through the electrodes. The discharge is terminated upon switch closure and the electrodes cool and come apart, whereupon a pulse of high voltage inites the lamp. The increased current through the lamp and diode branch after ignition causes the resistance to heat up and attach a value such that its resistance is large to effectively render the diode branch inoperative. In a modification, two or more lamps each shunted by a glow switch are employed in series. Component values are chosen such that the resistance 6 prior to lamp ignition has a value not exceeding twice that of the operating value of the lamp, and about 20 times this resistance after lamp ignition. The ignition voltage of the discharge switch should be more than 90% of the supply R.M.S. voltage.
