Abstract

1,264,397. Starting systems for gas discharge apparatus. AUCO N.V. 14 Nov., 1969 [20 Nov., 1968], No. 55921/69. Heading H2H. A system for igniting a gas discharge tube is provided with means whereby after a predetermined time should the tube not have ignited, the starting operation is terminated thereby protecting the discharge tube. In a known circuit for starting a discharge lamp 1 shown in Fig. 1 the starting device 5 is replaced by a starting circuit as illustrated in Fig. 2. Upon switching on, the capacitor 12, being of smaller capacitance than that of capacitor 14, charges rapidly to provide gating pulses for a thyristor 10 which fires in the appropriate half cycles to cause heating of the electrodes 2, 3 to ignite the lamp 1. Should the lamp fail to ignite the capacitor 14 gradually charges in a stepwise manner until the diode 17 becomes non-conductive so that no gating pulses are provided for the thyristor 10 and the starting process terminates. During the starting process and whilst the capacitor 14 is charging the firing instant of the thyristor 10 occurs later and later in the halfcyles of conduction. In other embodiments the thyristor is replaced by a triac, a full-wave rectifier bridge is connected between the resistor 9 and the thyristor and lastly a full-wave bridge may be associated with the capacitors 12, 14.
