Abstract
1,211,706. Supply systems for discharge lamps. THORN LIGHTING Ltd. 23 Jan., 1968 [22 Feb., 19671, No. 8537/67. Heading H2H. A high pressure sodium lamp 10 is supplied by the circuit arrangement shown, in which a conventional ballast choke 11 has a tapping 14 connected to a series circuit whose main components are a capacitor 15, a normally-open glow switch 17 and a normally-closed thermal switch 19 whose heater 20 carries the lamp operating current. When A.C. is applied to terminals 12, 13 the glow discharge in switch 17 causes its contacts to close and allow the flow of charging current for the capacitor 15, which current generates a voltage pulse across the choke 11 to start the lamp. Consequent current flow through the lamp and heater 20 opens the switch 19 to disconnect the glow switch 17. If the lamp does not start at the first voltage pulse, the switch 17 repeatedly opens and closes to generate a succession of random starting pulses. Resistor 16 limits the charging current and capacitors 18, 21 respectively provide radio interference suppression and power factor correction.
