In an arc welding circuit having electrodes 3, 4 fed from a transformer 1 and a second transformer 6 supplying a capacitor 9 discharging through a non-linear switching device 10 such as a spark-gap, the capacitance of the capacitor is so related to the characteristics of the second transformer that the ratio of magnetic and electrostatic energies stored is an integer, preferably one, and the switching device is adjustable so that the capacitor may give a single spark, or two successive sparks of reduced magnitude. The spark-gap may be adjustable to facilitate the matching of the capacitor and the second transformer. High-frequency chokes 14-17 may be provided to lengthen the pulse duration and a damping capacitor 18 may be provided.
