978,004. Cold cathode tubes. M.O. VALVE CO. Ltd., L. E. ALGAR, and K. G. COOK. Aug. 20, 1963 [Aug. 23, 1962], No. 32523/62. Heading H1D. A discharge tube has a spark gap between electrodes 6 and 7 and a trigger electrode 14, and contains a mixture of nitrogen with xenon and/or argon where the partial pressure of nitrogen is 10-90% of the total pressure, e.g. for xenon-nitrogen, between 30% and 90%, preferably 35% and 50% nitrogen, and for argon-nitrogen, between 10% and 70%, preferably 20% and 40% nitrogen and the total pressure (e.g. 500 or 1100 ton) is greater than that for the minimum static breakdown voltage for that composition. The tube illustrated has copper main electrodes 6, 7, metal flanges 4, 5 acting as leads, metal end-cap 10 and pinched-off filling tube 12, and ceramic walls 1 and 15.
