Abstract
1,148,978. Spark gaps; vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 1 May, 1967 [1 July, 1966], No. 19922/67. Headings H1D and H1N. [Also in Division C7] In a vacuum gap device evacuated to a pressure of 10<SP>-4</SP> mm. Hg or less, evolution of oxygen from the primary arc electrodes, at least portions of which comprise as a major constituent a non-refractory electrically conductive material of high vapour pressure, e.g. Cu, is prevented by incorporating in the electrodes a minor constituent having a high affinity for oxygen, and forming therewith a high-temperature stable oxide, e.g. Be or a rare earth, to form an alloy with the Cu. The device may have one fixed and one movable electrode (Fig. 1, not shown) or may have two fixed electrodes, one of which incorporates a trigger assembly (Fig. 2, not shown). The envelope may comprise a cylinder of glass, alumina or forsterite ceramic with end caps of stainless steel, nickel or titanium supporting the electrodes which are surrounded by a metal, e.g. stainless steel, shield.
