Abstract
1388283 Electrodes for vacuum switches or vacuum spark gaps ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 15 May 1973 [18 May 1972] 23464/72 Addition to 1194674 Headings H1N and H1D The arc supporting electrodes of a vacuum switch or spark-gap as described in Specification 1,194,674 are formed from a matrix metal comprising chromium containing from 0À5% to 13À5% by weight carbon, or iron containing from 1% to 2 % by weight carbon, and an infiltrated metal which comprises copper or copper alloy. The infiltrated metal occupies between 10% and 40% of the volume of the infiltrated matrix and in the case where it is a copper alloy is preferably copper alloyed with silver, zirconium, tantalum or titanium. An alloy of 99À7% copper and 0À3% zirconium is particularly mentioned. The metal particles forming the matrix are of a size not exceeding 250 microns and where the metal of the matrix is chromium the carbon content is preferably from 1% to 3%.
