Abstract
1,213,759. Vacuum switch contacts. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 19 Sept., 1969 [27 Sept., 1968], No. 46219/69. Heading H1N. Each of the pair of contacts 17, 18 within a highly evacuated envelope of a vacuum-type circuit interrupter comprises a porous matrix of a refractory metal e.g. tungsten or molybdenum combined with an alloy of copper and bismuth, the bismuth being less than 2% by weight of the alloy. The interrupter comprises a tubular casing 12 of insulating material sealed with a pair of metal end caps 13, 14. Fixed contact 17 is brazed to a contact rod 17a, and movable contact 18 brazed to rod 18a which moves through an opening in the lower end cap, sealed by a flexible metal bellows 20. The alloy composition reduces contact welding while a metal shield 21 condenses any metal vapours generated by the arc.
