Abstract
1,129,704. Spark gaps; vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 24 Oct., 1966 [30 Nov., 1965], No. 47598/66. Headings H1D and H1N. In a triggerable vacuum gap device comprising an envelope 9 evacuated to a pressure of 10<SP>-5</SP> mm. Hg or less and containing a pair of primary arc electrodes 2 and 3, a trigger assembly 5, 6 of the type described in Specification 1,063,947 comprising a gap in an interface between a ceramic material and a metal coated with active gas-containing material is located in an aperture in each of the primary electrodes 2, 3, thus enabling the device to operate on A.C. or D.C. An additional reservoir for active gas, e.g. hydrogen, may be provided in the form of getter material 37, e.g. titanium, shielded by baffles from the main gap. The device is sealed by a plug 35 after the introduction of the active gas. Materials specified are as follows:-Envelope 9-stainless steel; Members 11, 12, 17 and 18-an alloy suitable for forming metal/ceramic seals; Bushes 13 and 14-alumina ceramic; Electrodes 2 and 3-Cu or other high-vapour pressure material; Trigger electrode coating- a hydride of Ti, Zr, Hf, Y, Er or other rare earth metal. The main electrodes 2, 3 may both be fixed, as shown, or electrode 2 may be movably mounted on a bellows (41), (Fig. 3, not shown).
