Abstract

1,012,728. Spark apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 9, 1962 [May 10, 1961], No. 17858/62. Heading H1D. A triggered spark gap has a pair of spaced main electrodes 11, 12, Fig. 1, within a container of gas at a pressure on the low pressure side of the Paschon curve, and a pair of trigger electrodes 25, 26 spaced a short distance apart by an insulator 21, Fig. 2, across the surface of which occurs a triggering surface discharge thus generating charged particles independently of the gas filling to complete a conductive path between the main electrodes and initiate the main discharge. The main electrodes may be of molybdenum or tantalum and the container is completed by ceramic parts 14, 19. Ceramic insulator 21 has a continuous metallized surface layer 22 of molybdenum and manganese on which are deposited the electrodes 25, 26 of titanium or molybdenum with the gap 24. The filling may be helium at 500 microns, nitrogen at 100 microns, air at 8 microns, krypton, xenon or hydrogen. In another form the positive electrode 42, Fig. 4, is hemispherical and the discharge gap 51 is between concentr elecictrodes 41, 50, Fig. 6.
