Abstract

1,190,957. Cold-cathode tubes; vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 6 June, 1967 [21 Sept., 1966], No. 26149/67. Headings H1D and H1N. In a triggerable vacuum gap device provided with a restricted diameter nozzle leading to a central cavity containing a trigger gap for injecting a pulse of plasma into the primary gap upon receipt of an electrical signal, the trigger gap 54 is shielded by the wall 45 of the nozzle and comprises a groove scored in a coating extending over a ceramic insulator 46. The coating may be of hydrogen-storing material, such as titanium, or of metal such as copper or beryllium having a low vapour pressure. When the gap is fired a plasma is formed and the magnetic field produced by the current loop of the firing pulse propels the plasma through the nozzle. In Fig. 5, the trigger electrode 49 is cup-shaped and the trigger gap 54 is arranged vertically to give protection against the fall of liquid arc electrode material. The electrodes may be mounted rigidly in an envelope (Fig. 1, not shown), or one of them may be mounted on a bellows (Fig. 6, not shown) so that its position can be adjusted. The assembly of the complete device may be made in a hydrogen furnace in one atmosphere pressure of hydrogen so that the active gas storing material collects the trapped gas as it cools and lowers the pressure to 10<SP>-5</SP> mm. or less. Alternatively, a tubulation (23, Fig. 1) may be provided so that the device may be evacuated, filled and sealed subsequent to the formation of ceramic-to-metal seals in the envelope. If low vapour pressure metal is used the processing may be conducted entirely in vacuo.
