Abstract
1358043 Spark gaps UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 19 July 1971 [21 July 1970] 35388/70 Headings H1D and H1X Spark gap switch apparatus comprises a discshaped electrode 10A connected to a rod 10B for applying a potential difference to initiate an arc and passing through a hole defined by an annular portion of an electrode 8 which overlaps the electrode 10A so as to define a pronounced change in inter-electrode spacing at the periphery of electrode 10A, which periphery has a thickness small compared to the smallest interelectrode spacing, the current flow in the arc and electrode surfaces producing magnetic forces tending to keep the arc away from the said hole. The discharge may be initiated across the gap 12 by (a) suddenly raising the potential on one electrode, (b) applying a voltage less than the striking voltage and then pulsing one electrode, (c) suddenly reducing the spacing or the gas pressure between the electrodes, or (d) changing the gas filling to one having a lower breakdown voltage, e.g. from compressed air to argon or from SF 6 to air. The magnetic field of the arc causes it to move to the gap 14 or, if the arc current or duration is insufficient, the arc will remain at the gap 12. In either case the arc will not move to or through the narrow gap 16. In an alternative open arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown) electrode 8 is a flat ring.
