Abstract
966,469. Cathode-ray tubes; spark apparatus. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. March 26, 1963 [March 28, 1962], No. 11959/63. Heading H1D. A cathode-ray tube having a cathode 20, control grid G1, a screen grid G2 and an accelerating anode G3 incorporates within an envelope 12 a surge by-pass device comprising a wire 32 connected through a lead 34 to earth potential and having a spark-gap 36 such that the sparking potential between the wire 32 and the screen-grid G2 is less than the sparking- potential of gap 30 between grids G2 and G1. The wire 32 is made of a nickel alloy or a coldemitter such as titanium, magnesium or a barium-nickel alloy. In alternative embodiments the surge by-pass device comprises (1) a gas-filled encapsulating, hermetically sealed envelope having a pair of spaced plate electrodes forming the spark-gap 36; (2) a U-shaped insulating member having two spaced plateelectrodes and (3) a cylindrical insulating block having end-plates with raised bosses forming the electrodes.
