Abstract

1,178,269. Cold cathode tubes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 23 May, 1967 [15 July, 1966], No. 23826/67. Heading H1D. An over-voltage protection device 10 comprises a thermally and mechanically shockresistant sealed refractory envelope including inner and outer coaxial tubes 13, 11 forming an annular gas-filled discharge region in which two electrodes 12, 14 are disposed axially opposite each other, one of the electrodes, may be axially movable. The device is filled with N 2 , O 2 or a rare gas which may be maintained in an ionized state by passing a permanent current through the device. The outer tube may be strengthened by wire wound around its outer surface.
