Abstract

1316803 Metal-vapour lamps GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 20 May 1970 [7 July 1969] 24504/70 Heading H1D A discharge lamp providing radiation concentrated in the blue, green and red spectral bands has a filling including an inert starting gas at a pressure of a low torr, at least one metal halide emitter providing radiation in the selected spectral bands selected from TlI, ScI 3 , CaI 2 , CsI, DyI 3 , NaI, SnI 3 , LaI 3 , LiI and BaI 2 , and at least one metal halide buffer serving to increase the energy input to the arc and augment the radiation from the emitter selected from SbI 3 , AsI 3 , BiI 3 , InI 3 , ZnI 2 , CdI 2 and PbI 2 , the buffer having a figure of merit, i.e. molecular weight x vapour pressure at 600‹ C. Î number of halogen atoms in the molecule x 10<SP>-4</SP>, greater than 1, and the emitter having a figure of merit not greater than 1 and an ionization potential less than that of the buffer. Mercury may be present as a secondary buffer. Electrodes 2, 2<SP>1</SP> each comprise a double layer tungsten helix 6 wrapped around a tungsten core wire 7 connected to a lead 3 by a molybdenum foil 4. The electrodes may be activated by thorium oxide but are preferably unactivated. Quartz heat shields 8 extending to the tips of the electrodes are packed with quartz fibres 9.
