Abstract

1,190,424. Glow-discharge lamps. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 8 Sept., 1967 [4 Oct., 1966], No. 41092/67. Heading H1D. A discharge lamp for producing spectral lines characteristic of the cathode material and comprising an anode 26 and a hollow cathode 22, is characterized by the provision of an auxiliary electrode 28 for establishing an auxiliary discharge through the cathode to intensify the required spectral lines. The anode and the auxiliary electrode are preferably annular, as shown, and insulating shields 30, 32, 53 and 54 are provided to confine the discharge, and the lead-in and support wire 18-21 are covered with insulating sleeves. The cathode may be of zinc-copper or of copper or of nickel, and the anode may be of tantalum so that it may also act as a getter if the tube is operated with reversed polarities. The filling may comprise argon or neon at a pressure of 1 to 50 mm. and the envelope includes a window 14 transparent to the required spectral lines. Separate power sources may be connected between the anode and the cathode and the auxiliary electrode (Fig. 1, not shown), or a single power source may have one terminal connected to the anode and the other through individual variable resistances to the other two electrodes (Fig. 3, not shown). The power source may be D.C., A.C., or pulsed current, and the auxiliary discharge serves to increase the radiation from neutral atoms compared with that from ionized atoms.
