Abstract

1,019,845. Discharge lamps. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. Oct. 9, 1963 [Oct. 15, 1962], No. 39844/63. Heading H1D. In a lamp for exciting an atomic emission spectrum, material which has been vaporized by sputtering, e.g. in the hollow cathode 31, is excited by a second discharge, e.g. in a rare gas at 1 mm. pressure between electrodes 40, 41. These electrodes for the second discharge may be protected from the sputtered material, and the discharge collimated, by the glass tubes 38, 39. A rod anode may be mounted adjacent the cathode 31. The emission spectrum may be viewed through a window 43, e.g. of glass, quartz, silica or sodium chloride, remote from the sputtering.
