Abstract

1,204,390. Discharge lamps. COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. 29 Dec., 1967 [3 Jan., 1967 (2)], No. 59243/67. Heading H1D. A discharge lamp for generating the spectrum of a desired element comprises means for heating a body of the element and means for generating a discharge through the vapour thus produced. In Fig. 1 the element 18 is contained in a cup member 19 provided with a heating element 20. The discharge electrodes 26, 28 are mounted within tubular shields 30, 32 provided with apertures 34, 36 for the discharge, and the envelope is provided with a window 14. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the desired element is in the form of a disc heated by a heating element and mounted at the bottom of a shield member provided with an aperture for the emitted light and with side apertures into which project tubular shield members attached to the shields 30, 32. The anode may be a rod and may be unshielded. In a further arrangement, Fig. 3 (no, shown), a directly heated discharge cathode is surrounded by a shield coated on the outside with the desired element which is thus heated by the cathode heating current; the anode is a rod, and the discharge is confined by a shield supported from the cathode structure and provided with an aperture for the passage of the emitted light.
