Abstract

1,034,435. Metal-vapour-lamps. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. Feb. 6, 1963 [March 26, 1962], No. 4926/63. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G1] A double-beam lamp for use in a fluorometer (see Division G1) comprises a single cathode disposed between two anodes 55, 56, and a shield 57 defining two optically isolated areas each including the cathode and an anode so that by applying a positive voltage to the respective anodes in alternate periods of an electrical supply cycle, radiation is emitted in different directions in said alternate periods. The cathode comprises a heater wire 53 in a box-like structure 54 provided with a peripheral shoulder 60, Fig. 5 (not shown) for supporting the cathode on the lower spacer plate 59. The shield 57 encloses the cathode except for apertures 64 facing the anodes which have apertures 68. The shield has wings 66 and fins 69 which collect positive ions and concentrate the discharge. An envelope enclosing the electrodes is provided with a groove 48, Fig. 2 (not shown), for engagement with a U-shaped clamp to remove the lamp from its socket. The envelope is filled with a gas, e.g. mercury vapour at a pressure of 6 to 10 microns, and may have a phosphor coating.
