Abstract

1,209,078. Thermionic cathode constructions. SIEMENS A.G. 9 April, 1968 [10 April, 1967], No. 16923/68. Heading H1D. A dispenser cathode comprises a porous emissive-substance carrier plate 3 which closes off the end of the supply chamber 1 provided with a heater 4 housed in a cylindrical ceramic oxide sheath 5 which is attached to the supply chamber 1 and which is surrounded by a spaced metal foil supporting cylinder 6 also attached to the supply chamber 1. The heater may be of the bifilar spiral type or a single filament spiral having one end connected directly to the supply chamber, and in the latter case an additional metal cylinder connected to the supply chamber may be provided between the ceramic sheath 5 and cylinder 6 to act as a supply lead for the heater. The ceramic sheath 5 may be of aluminium oxide or beryllium oxide and the supporting cylinder 6 of tantalum. The dispenser cathode may be incorporated in a travelling wave tube or disc-seal tube, and may be operated with a D.C. heater current source or with A.C. heater current source exhibiting a D.C. bias with respect to the cathode.
