Abstract
1,041,282. Cathode materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 26, 1964 [March 26, 1963], No. 12980/64. Heading H1D. A thermionic cathode includes at least one boride of calcium, barium, strontium, thorium, uranium, or a rare earth-particularly lanthanum or misch metal-on a rhenium support. A lanthanum hexaboride coating 12 (Fig. 3, not shown), produced by spraying, dipping, painting, or sintering in argon a boride/amyl acetate paste, is disposed on a rhenium tube 10 between the turns of a loosely wound rhenium wire 11. In alternative embodiments, the inner tube 10 may be dispensed with (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown); the cathode may be hairpin-shaped (Fig. 5, not shown); and, instead of being directly heated, a heater wire may be coiled about, but out of contact with, the cathode (Fig. 4, not shown).
