Abstract
931,890. Thermionic cathodes. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. May 7, 1962 [May 5, 1961], No. 17508/62. Class 39 (1). A cathode assembly includes a heater 21 spaced from a cylindrical, emissive sleeve 22 by a resilient coil 12 of insulated wire which has spaced exterior portions 13 bearing against the sleeve 22 and spaced internal portions 15 engaging the heater. As shown, coil 12 is formed by winding tungsten or molybdenum wire, coated before or afterwards with aluminium oxide, round a mandrel of square or other polygonal crosssection, and then allowing it to unwind slightly to a diameter slightly greater than that of sleeve 22. After inserting the heater within coil 12, these two elements may be coated with alundum before inserting them in cathode sleeve 22 which may have an internal coating 24 of aluminium oxide. Alternatively, an elliptically wound spacer coil may be used or a coil of repetitive hour-glass contour.
