Abstract

982,206. Thermionic cathodes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Nov. 1, 1962 [Nov. 29, 1961], No. 41420/62. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H5] A cathode heater comprises two wire strands 32, 33, Fig. 4a, wound to form a bifilar helical coil, which coil is then formed into a larger coil. Current is passed in opposite directions in the two strands so that magnetic fields set up by the currents in the two strands substantially neutralize one another. As shown, the two strands of the bifilar helix are connected in series by a turn 34 arranged in a plane perpendicular to the cathode surface 36. Alternatively, the two strands may be connected in parallel, the two ends 42, 43, Fig. 13, being passed down the centre of the larger helix 41. Instead of being formed into a larger helix, the bifilar helical coil may be wound into a flat coil, e.g. a single or double spiral or a zig-zag pancake coil. The cathode may be used in klystrons, travelling-wave tubes or magnetrons.
