Abstract
1,012,695. Indirectly - heated cathodes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 11, 1963 [Oct. 15, 1962], No. 40226/63. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H5] An indirectly-heated electron tube cathode comprises a tungsten wire heating element 1, Fig. 2, wound helically with a fine pitch and coated with an insulating layer 2, the insulating layer being formed with a helical hollow rib 3 of insulating material, the pitch of which exceeds that of the tungsten wire, and the wall of the rib itself being locally provided with protuberances. As shown, in manufacture, the tungsten wire 1 is wound on to a molybdenum core 4, and a molybdenum wire 5 is helically-wound on a second core 6 of molybdenum or iron, then the second core is helically wound on to the first core over the tungsten wire. After coating the assembly with insulating material, e.g. alumina, and sintering, the cores 4, 5, 6 are removed chemically, and the coated heater is bent to form two or more nearly parallel limbs. In an alternative arrangement, the tungsten wire heating element 1, Fig. 4, wound on a first core, is bent to form a plurality of substantially parallel limbs and coated with insulating material 10, before winding the second core 12 wound with wire 14 thereover, and again coating with insulating material, and dissolving out the cores and wire 14. A specific example is given.
