Abstract

1,136,139. Thermionic cathode constructions. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON - HOTCHKISS BRANDT. 20 July, 1966 [20 July, 1965], No. 32662/66. Heading H1D. A filamentary cathode for high power electronic tubes comprises at least two coaxial tubular portions of metal mesh each formed of two helically wound layers of wire, the ends of each portion being fixed to the edges of circular plates spaced axially by a distance less than their diameter. The cathode comprises a single tube of thoriated W wire mesh having Mo end plates 2, 3 and is divided into portions 30 by intermediate plates 4, 5. Pairs of rods 6, 7 attached to end plates 2, 3 respectively support the cathode and act as current conductors. Rods 6 are clamped to but insulated from plates 4, 5 by ceramic discs 8 and nuts 9. The cathode may comprise two separate portions connected to intermediate dished plates joined together and supported by two or three coaxial tubes which may be slotted to aid cooling. Current may be passed in series or parallel through the two portions using additional conductors in the latter case. In an electronic tube having a metal-ceramic envelope the cathode is surrounded by a control grid reinforced by a rigid ring which assists cooling of the grid wires.
