Abstract
931,059. Thermionic cathodes. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 8, 1962 [Feb. 10, 1961], No. 5006/61. Class 39 (1). A cathode comprises a number of fine tungsten wires braided to form a tube 10 which is filled with thermionically emissive material except for end portions 16, 17 which are secured to lead-in wires 11, 12. The cathode may be used in a lowpressure fluorescent discharge lamp, the tube 10 being wound into a helix transverse to the tube axis, or into a double helix coaxial with the tube axis. The tube 10 may be formed by braiding eight tungsten wires on a mandrel of molybdenum wire, half the wires being wound in one direction and half in the opposite direction, each wire crossing alternately inside and outside those wound in the opposite direction. Dimensions are given. The tube is then set in a desired shape, and, after removal of the core, is filled with a mixture of alkaline earth carbonates. The resistance of the cathode should be between 2.5 and 2.7 ohms at 20‹ C.
