Abstract
1,025,168. Thermionic cathodes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 17, 1964 [Sept. 20, 1963], No. 38008/64. Heading H1D. A cathode assembly comprises a plurality of parallel, thin wires wound over two tubular supports 1, 2, which are spaced apart by a distance piece 3 having rod-shaped ends which extend freely through apertures 12 provided in the tubes 1, 2. As shown, the assembly is supported in a discharge tube between a mica plate 13 and a tensioning device 11, the tube 1 being free to move and tilt slightly relative to tube 2, which ensures an even tensioning of emissive wires 5. The tubes 1, 2 may be of nickel, distance piece 3 being of ceramic or comprising two metal rods joined by a central ceramic or glass bead; or a metal distance piece may be used with metal tubes lined with insulating material or with ceramic tubes provided with one or more conductive strips joining groups of emissive wires in parallel, the groups then being joined in series. Also the distance piece may comprise short end rods joined by a metal plate acting as a shield between the two emissive surfaces and coated with gathering material.
