Abstract

678,258. Cathode materials and processing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 12, 1951 [March 31, 1950], No. 5910/51. Class 39 (i). A thermionic cathode comprises, or consists of, at least one boride, e.g. hexaboride, of calcium, barium, strontium, thorium, uranium or the rare earth metals such as lanthanum, cerium, neodymium or misch metal. Powdered boron and metal powder or filings may be mixed and pressed and sintered to 1375-1850 C. in vacuum or helium or argon to the required shape or to produce a mass which is ball-milled and made into a spray or paste with amyl acetate, water or a cellulose binder. The paste may be applied to a directlyheated cathode, which consists of a helix wound on a wire core, and sintered at 1600‹ C. A boride rod, supported and connected by conducting coatings to end rods, may be heated directly or by a surrounding helix. A screengrid valve has a cathode in the form of a rimmed disc 19 which contains sintered boride 22 and is heated by thermal and thermionic radiation from a filament 20. Emission curves of various borides are included in the Specification.
