Abstract
1,080,600. Spark gaps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 24, 1963 [Dec. 27, 1962], No. 50870/63. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H2] A spark gap tube containing an inert gas, e.g. argon, at 25-500 mm. Hg has two electrodes not more than 5 mm. apart, each comprising a refractory metal coil coated with an electron emissive material, e.g. in the embodiment a tungsten shank (21) carrying inner (22) and outer (23) tungsten coils, e.g. 14 and 17 mil diameter respectively, coated with (24) barium thorate or zirconate applied as a suspension in ethyl alcohol or butyl acetate containing added thorium or zirconium, respectively, and heated to 800‹ C. under vacuum to yield free barium. This arrangement provides a spark gap having electrodes of high heat capacity and low heat dissipation in the spark, and is suitable for use with a high-pressure sodium vapour lamp having a relatively long narrow envelope operating at a high current density.
