Abstract

978,217. Thermionic cathodes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 11, 1961 [Oct. 14, 1960], No. 36505/61. Heading H1D. A directly-heated cathode unit, for an electric discharge tube, comprises a plurality of thin wires 1, Figs. 1 and 2, connected in parallel and wound on two metal end members 2, 3 of U-shaped cross-section insulated from one another and arranged on two opposite parallel edges of a supporting plate 4, at least one of the end members being slidable on the plate. As shown, both end members 2, 3 fit slidably over opposite ends of ceramic plate 4 and are welded to support wires 5, 6, wire 5 being mounted on a support rod in the discharge tube while wire 6 is provided with a brace 7 engaged by a spring-loaded cross-bar 15 for tensioning wires 1. Wire 1 may be of thoriated tungsten or of tungsten or molybdenum coated with a barium-strontium emissive paste, the emissive coating being removed where the wire contacts end members 2, 3. Ceramic plate 4 may be replaced either by a mica plate 11, Fig. 3, supported by slidable metal tubes 9, 10 of rectangular cross-section welded to end members 2, 3, or by a molybdenum plate having insulating coatings over its ends, Fig. 5 (not shown). In the latter case the plate may be coated with zirconium powder and operated as an ion trap. Suitable dimensions are given.
