Abstract
1,024,897. Cold cathode tubes; cathode materials. CSF COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. March 6, 1964 [March 15, 1963], No. 9524/64. Heading H1D. A cold emission cathode comprises a porous dielectric layer 5 supported on a thin metal layer 4; an initial positive charge is created on the surface of the layer 5, to initiate electron emission therefrom, by electrons emitted from a dielectric layer 3 supported upon the metal layer 2. The layer 2 may be an aluminium sheet 1 mm. thick, the layer 3 may be alumina 100-300 thick, the layer 4 may be gold, platinum or palladium 400 thick, and the layer 5 may be magnesia 50 micron thick. 10 v. may be applied between layers 2 and 4, electron passage through the layer 3 being by tunnel effect, while 200-300 v. may be applied between layer 4 and the external grid 6, giving avalanche electron multiplication in layer 5. Other grid 9, 10 and collector 11 electrodes may be provided.
