Abstract
1,035,067. Thermionic generators. CSFCOMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. June 29, 1964 [July 6, 1963], No. 26713/64. Addition to 903,375. Heading H1D. A thermionic converter comprises an electron collector 8, and an electron emitter 1 provided with a number of capillary channels 2 which extend between the interelectrode space and a space on the opposite side of the emitter communicating with a source 11 of metal vapour having an ionization potential lower than the work function of the emitter material. During operation, the metal vapour traverses the emitter channels 2 and is ionized by contact with heated emitter 1, and is also subjected to volume ionization by irradiation with light, which together with heat energy may be directed through sapphire window 3. The emitter 1 may be of tungsten and may comprise an assembly of straight or curved capillary tubes or a porous sintered body, the collector 8 being of copper. The metal vapour source may comprise a caesium reservoir 11 provided with a heater 12.
