Abstract

The high voltage pulses applied across the anode and cathode produce an electric field sufficient to strip the natural electron-ion plasma from the cold cathode surface producing a high current. This would be sufficient to destroy the cathode, and to increase the cathode life this plasma is continuously replaced, either by a discrete gas feed through the interior of the cathode body to a porous surface section opposite the anode, or by gas liberated from a (clathrate) body behind that front section. The gas used has a low atomic number and low ionising voltage e.g. is one of the following: H2, He, N2 or alkaline earth metal vapour.
