Abstract
438,961. Thermionic valves. RUBEN, S., 265, Storer Avenue, New Rochelle, New York, U.S.A. May 4, 1934, No. 13545. Convention date, May 5, 1933. [Class 39 (i)] In an amplifier containing an ionizable medium, a control grid is arranged at a distance from the cathode not greater than the cathode fall space, a shielding electrode between the control grid and the anode is arranged close enough to the control grid to prevent ionization between the grids, and the anode is at a distance from the cathode greater than the cathode fall space. A controllable electron discharge is thus produced, the space charge being reduced by ionization, and a high output is obtained with a potential of 250 volts on the anode. The filling may be mercury to which may be added sodium or potassium, or a monatomic gas such as neon, argon or helium. As shown, an indirectly-heated cathode 2 is surrounded by a helical control grid 3, a helical shield grid 4, and a cylindrical anode, 5 which may be corrugated and tapered upwardly. The spacing of the turns of the control grid should be not greater than twice the cathode fall space length, so as to prevent the discharge through it of uncontrolled electron emission ; the shield grid may have the same spacing. Dimensions are given. The discharge is confined to the space between the cathode and the anode by mica plates 7. The envelope is coated. with carbon.
