Abstract
1433238 Thermionic cathodes KERNFORSCHUNG mbH GES FUER 22 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 39760/73 Heading H1D A directly heated cathode comprises a metal or metal carbide electron emitter 3 mounted in a graphite body 7. A plug 3 of Hf carbide or W is mounted in a U-shaped graphite body having arms 5, 6 and a connecting portion 7 of smaller cross-section with a conical aperture 8. Heating current of 100-300 amperes is supplied via Ta coated W conductors 10, 11 which also stiffen the graphite body. A hole 14 allows used plugs to be ejected. The cathode forms part of an ion source including a low pressure gas discharge space 2 across which a strong magnetic field is applied to define the discharge. Ions are extracted by a 33 MHz 40 kv. voltage.
